How We Test
Our goal is simple: tell a beginner which tool to buy, and why — in terms that make sense for real weekend projects.
What we evaluate
- Manufacturer specifications — torque, RPM, battery voltage and amp-hours, weight, chuck size — checked against the official manual, not a retailer listing.
- Verified owner feedback — recurring complaints and praise across many owners, especially about battery life, chuck quality, and durability.
- Total cost of ownership — kit vs bare tool pricing, battery and charger costs, and what the same battery platform offers next.
- Fit for beginners — weight, grip, controls, and whether the tool forgives common beginner mistakes.
What we do not do
- We do not claim hands-on test results for tools we have not personally used. Where an article is research-based, it says so.
- We do not accept payment for rankings. Brands cannot pay to be our top pick.
- We do not copy spec sheets and call it a review. Every recommendation explains what the numbers mean in practice.
Updates
Tool lineups change every year. We re-check models, prices, and availability before updating a "best of" article, and we show the update date on every article.
